Our Motto

Train today. Train for life.

At Wickhams, our Black Belt Program is designed as a long-term journey, not a rush to rank. The program typically takes around four years to complete, sometimes longer depending on attendance. That’s intentional. We focus on consistency, growth, and enjoying the learning process, not just chasing belts.

Progressing through the program is about developing skill, character, and commitment. Rank matters, but the journey matters more.

More Than Training

Along the way, students have opportunities to take part in incentive and leadership programs that help them grow beyond the mats. These programs encourage responsibility, teamwork, and confidence.

We are also linked with a recognised Martial Arts College, where eligible members can work towards coaching qualifications with our guidance and support.

While we offer structured programs for both children and adults, our goal goes beyond regular training. We aim to equip students with practical self defence skills and life skills they can carry with them for years to come.

These life skills include:

  • Respect

  • Self-confidence

  • Organisation and responsibility

  • Fitness and health awareness

To support this, we offer a range of additional programs alongside regular memberships.

Skills for Life – Children’s Program

For our younger students, learning continues beyond the dojo. With the support of parents and guardians, children are encouraged to apply what they learn at home and in everyday situations.

Our Skills for Life program uses a simple monthly checklist. When students apply these skills consistently, they are recognised with a certificate at the end of each month. It’s a practical, positive way to reinforce good habits and personal growth.

Martial arts is a life skill, much like swimming. Learning to swim can save a life. Learning martial arts helps children cope with physical conflict, verbal bullying, and everyday challenges they may face.

As parents, it’s not always easy to know how to support children in these situations. We provide a clear action plan and guidance to help families navigate them together.

Modern martial arts training is also known to support children with learning difficulties, and we have helped many students grow in confidence and capability through structured training. All our instructors are police checked and genuinely committed to guiding students toward their goals.

Assistant Instructor Program

Leadership development is a powerful part of a child’s growth. Our Assistant Instructor pathway gives students the opportunity to build confidence, responsibility, and communication skills.

Students can begin this journey through our leadership program, progressing through different levels from junior assistant to mentor and coach. Once a student reaches Green Belt level, they can attend Assistant Instructor classes, which run once per term.

After completing these sessions, students can begin assisting in regular classes, supporting instructors and acting as positive role models for younger members.

Demonstration Team

Our Demonstration Team is handpicked and made up of students who show commitment, focus, and teamwork. Members train and practise demonstration drills and perform at schools and community events.

Being part of the team requires dedication, regular training, and a willingness to work together as a group.

Fight Team

Our Fight Team includes members who choose to compete in tournaments, from forms and kata to sparring competitions. Students train directly with the Head Instructor in preparation for events.

Competition dates are listed on the calendar, and while we encourage students to compete at least once during their training journey, our focus is never just on winning.

For us, competition is about participation, personal growth, and learning from the experience. Every contest is an opportunity to build resilience, confidence, and self-belief.
